Your Mexico Vacation: Shopping and Tax Information

Although your quiet Mexico beach villa will provide plenty of opportunities for enjoying a relaxed and luxurious vacation, there is still plenty to see and do off the sand, as well. In fact, one of the many reasons people choose this part of the country for their tropical getaway is the proximity to larger cities like Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. If taking in the historic sites, enjoying an active nightlife, and shopping are on your itinerary, you’ve come to the right place!

Shopping in Mexico is one of the big reasons so many people come back, year after year. The colorful collectibles and unique handcrafted items are unlike anything you can find anywhere else in the world, and the cost makes it easy to fill a whole suitcase of things to take home. From decorations and plateware to clothes and gifts, it’s hard to say no to this kind of shopping spree!

Shops You’ll Find on the Pacific Coast

Whether you spend a few days in Ixtapa or stick to the smaller beach communities, you’ll find plenty of different types of shops. Upscale boutiques, art galleries, shopping malls, indoor markets, and artisan centers are available in many locations, offering the chance to buy just about every item on your wish list.

Of course, shopping in Mexico isn’t quite like shopping back home. Although the shops catering to foreigners often provide fixed prices and a similar retail experience to what you’re used to, you’ll also find that bargaining can be a part of the more local shopping districts. You can always pay what’s asked of you, but bringing the price down by as much as 50 percent is also fairly common.

What to Buy in Mexico

Although you should feel free to purchase whatever goods suit your fancy, Mexico is particularly known for a few items. Things to look out for include:

  • Holiday Decorations
  • Pottery
  • Silver
  • Clothes
  • Textiles (Rugs and Blankets)
  • Unique Kids Toys
  • Sculptures/Fine Art

As is the case with any sort of large purchase, be wary of being taken in by items that sound too good to be true. Stick to more established shops for expensive items like jewelry and fine art.

Shopping in Mexico is traditionally done during normal business hours, though you can expect many shops to be closed on Sundays and for a midday break. The best hours to try shopping are between 9am and 2pm, and then about 4pm to 8pm.

Mexico Shopping: Tax Information

In most cases (especially small markets), you should expect to pay for your items with cash. Some of the larger stores will take credit cards, but they may charge more for this privilege. Your purchases will also be subject to the VAT tax (value added tax), which adds a 15 percent tax onto your purchase. For travelers from international destinations, you should always save your receipts, since you can get a refund via mail once you get home.

Start Your Mexican Beach Vacation Here

Even if you only plan on buying a few token souvenirs to take home with you, the Mexico shopping experience is something you shouldn’t miss. Purchase local wares that support the economy or splurge on larger items that you can showcase in your home—you’ll be glad you took the time to find a permanent memory of your vacation that you and your loved ones can enjoy for years.

Troncones is a warm and  friendly village with a population of about 500.   Americans,  Canadians and Europeans join the locals in  the population and during our high season (mid November – May 1st)  our village is host to 300 or so vacation visitors, a huge percentage of which return year after year.    On warm, moonlit nights we see endangered sea turtles laying their eggs in Troncones sand, flocks of pelicans fish our waters and the dolphins and whales swim.

The staff is doing great!  For all of our regulars,  here’s a quick update.    Maria, Veronica and Victorina still  always have warm happy faces and keep the accommodations spotless.  Humberto and Jose keep busy with the gardens and oceanfront maintenance.  Humberto, sadly and unexpectantly, lost his father last month.   Thank all of you that sent him wishes.  If you know him, you know how much it meant to him.

Mexico’s Best-Kept Secret: The Tranquil Troncones Beach Resort

Troncones Mexico villa suiteMexican beach villas have always been one of those vacations that many people dream of, but few see through to the end. That’s because there are any number of imagined obstacles in the way. Whether you think the price isn’t right or if you imagine it’s the type of place where only the young and adventurous have fun, we’re here to let you know that Mexico can be quiet, relaxing, and friendly on your wallet.

When you choose a beach resort in Troncones, you can set your own pace and create your own itinerary—and you can do it for much less than you probably expect.

Troncones Vacation Villas: A World Apart

Troncones is a small fishing community located about 20 miles north of the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo region. Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are famous as a hotspot for vacationers from all over the world, and many of the images and stereotypes about Mexico have their roots here.

That’s not to say that these are bad places to visit. On the contrary, Zihuatanejo is rich with history and culture, and many people find that there is no better place to get a glimpse of historic Mexico. Ixtapa, on the other hand, is a more upscale region where you’ll find five-star accommodations, high-end shopping, and the chance to enjoy Mexico in style. And in both regions, you’ll find the kind of nightlife that makes this area so famous. For the young and young at heart, you can enjoy drinks, dancing, and staying up until dawn. Most of the touristy areas expect this kind of activity, so many of the venues cater to foreigners and provide a safe retreat for all ages.

However, if something a little bit lower-key is more your style, we encourage you to take the short journey (offered regularly via mini-bus and taxi service) north to Troncones. Here you’ll find the other side of a Mexico vacation getaway: hammocks, tropical drinks, and the obligatory surf, sun, and sand.

Things to See and Do in Troncones

Because the pace is a little bit slower here in Troncones, you can fit as much (or as little) activity into your Mexico beach vacation as you’d like. Many of our guests come equipped with nothing more than a stack of books and a swimming suit, while others seek more adventure. At Casa de la Sirena, we’re equipped to handle both ends of the spectrum. You’ll find:

  • Fully Equipped Vacation Villas: Our villas, mini-villas, and bungalows are great accommodations for families and groups of all sizes. Offering kitchenettes, private views, and more, you can just as easily host a small gathering over the grill as spend a quiet evening with the one you love.
  • Private Beach Setting: Casa de la Sirena is located on a private, three-mile strip of beach that offers that perfect touch of tropical isolation. From a yoga studio designed to accommodate large parties to your own private spot in the sand, we make it easy to unwind, relax, and take in the sights at your own pace.
  • Water and Eco-Tour Activities: Troncones is a hotspot for surfers and fishing opportunities, both of which provide plenty of activity for those who want to get on the water. Kayak tours also allow you to see the sights up close and personal, and those with a penchant for animal life can go bird watching and whale watching.
  • On Site Luxury Services: One of the best ways to enjoy a private retreat is with spa services like manicures, pedicures, and massage—especially if you’re considering Troncones as a wedding destination.

Of course, one of the reasons so many people keep coming back to our Troncones beach resort is because of the ambiance and people of the local town, which has a population of just around 500 residents. Small, unique restaurants cater to the select tourist crowd, and many of the features here are designed to keep you entertained on a budget. One of Mexico’s best-kept secrets, Troncones is the beachfront vacationing at its best.

Mexican Eco-Tours

Beach sunset in Troncones MexicoIf you enjoy travel but want to do it in a way that is ecologically responsible, eco-tours are a great vacation choice. From wildlife adventures to excursions that make contributions to local ecological societies, you can enjoy the native flora and fauna without damaging it for future generations. Here at Casa de la Sirena, we fully support eco-tourism and are proud to offer it as part of our list of services.

Most Mexico vacation villas are all about getting away and enjoying some time on the beach with a drink in hand—and there’s nothing wrong with that scenario. But if you’re looking for something a little bit beyond the traditional tropical vacation, we have the Mexico eco-tours you want.

How Eco-Tourism Helps Sustain the Environment

Eco-tourism is still a relatively new field, and the term is used to cover a variety of tourist options. For some, it means the chance to visit an ecological system without causing damage to the delicate balance that exists there. For others, it means visiting sights and towns that are integrally linked to the land. For still others, it has more to do with honoring natural resources by channeling funds into a system that seeks to preserve nature, wildlife, and the land.

Here at our Mexican beach villas, we offer opportunities to do all three of these.

  • The ecological systems in and around Troncones are some of the most beautiful you’ll find in this part of Mexico. Because this area is still largely untouched by development, our visitors often come for the chance to bird watch and whale watch, see the hatching of the sea turtles, and take walking and biking tours of the natural landscape. Kayak tours and cave explorations are also some favorite eco-tour options here.
  • The town of Troncones is one that has a long history of fishing and local produce production. A small, sleepy village that has always been tied to the land, Troncones has resisted efforts to build by putting the focus right where it belongs: on the ocean and the mountains. Although participating in fishing activities isn’t for everyone, it honors a long tradition of life here in Troncones, and you can even fry up your catch to remain tied to the land.
  • You’ll also find plenty of opportunities to contribute to the local ecological systems through regular activities like hiking, biking, horseback riding, surfing, and even spending all your time on the beach. Conservation efforts and the tourist trade here are very much tied up together, and we all work together to ensure that our land remains free and pure for those who want to visit ten, twenty, or even fifty years from now.

Here at Casa de la Sirena, we welcome all types of vacationers and travelers. It doesn’t matter whether you want a chance to relax on the beach and watch the sunset every night, or if you plan on exploring the area on foot to get a good look at all the natural scenery. Our wide range of activities and amenities mean that you set the pace for your Mexican beach vacation getaway!

Why Choose Beach Weddings and Receptions in Zihuatanejo, Mexico

Destination weddings, which allow you and your guests to take in the local sights and sounds for your big day, are a hot trend in the marriage market right now. Part honeymoon and part traditional ceremony, these types of weddings are a great way to unite family and friends in a location you might not otherwise get to enjoy together. Right now Mexico beach weddings are one of the top choices for destination weddings in the tropics.

Whether you’ve always dreamed of getting married against a beachfront sunset, or if you have dreams of your own private Mexico vacation villa as a honeymoon destination, a wedding in the Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa region is an event you and your guests will never forget. Here are just a few of the benefits to a destination wedding in an area like ours:

Get the Complete Package: These days, planning a wedding can take up to a year of your time, including consultations, shopping, cake tastings, and all the stress that comes with organizing an event with hundreds of guests. A Mexico beach wedding is designed to do the exact opposite—with everything from catering and spa services right here, all you have to do is show up and spend your time relaxing on the beach. Let us take care of the rest.

Keep Things Select: When you plan a tropical destination wedding, your guest list becomes a whole lot easier to make. Almost everyone understands that a wedding ceremony like this is meant to be small and private, usually held just for a handful of close friends and family members. Having a ceremony here means you can avoid all the complications of extended relatives and plus one invitations.

Save Money: It might seem counter-intuitive, but hosting your nuptials in this part of Mexico can actually save you money on the wedding plans. In addition to a smaller guest list, you’ll find that accommodations (even for large parties) are relatively low-cost. And because you can find a site like ours, where the small town setting and beachfront community provide low-key entertainment every day of the week, additional expenses can be kept to a minimum. In most cases, family and friends expect to cover their own airfare, as well, which can help keep your wedding budget in check.

A Mexico Honeymoon Villa Awaits: Of course, one of the best reasons to have a wedding in this region is that you are already in place for the honeymoon of your dreams. From high-end shopping and spa services in Ixtapa to a quiet beach setting right here in Troncones, you’ve already set the scene for a honeymoon as full of adventure or solitude as you want. You can even plan on staying a few days (or weeks) after your family has departed for some much-needed alone time.

Mexico Beach Weddings the Casa de la Sirena Way

Casa de la Sirena is the perfect place to have your Mexico beach wedding. Because we can accommodate parties of up to 75 (and as few as just you and your spouse-to-be), you can customize a wedding package as unique as you are.

For a destination wedding in one of the best locations in the world, look no further than the Troncones and Zihuatanejo region. We have the beauty, the amenities, and the ambiance…all you need to bring is the bride!

Zihuatanejo Resorts: Safe and Fun for the Whole Family

Horseback riding near Zihuatanejo MexicoThese days, Mexico vacation rentals are a source of debate when it comes to safety and travel. Media and government reports tend to put the focus on the worst parts of Mexico’s troubles.

However, as many residents, expats, and regular visitors will tell you, a vacation to Mexico is rarely dangerous. By avoiding high-conflict inner cities and enjoying a beachfront villa like those you’ll find in Troncones, you’ll find no more danger than what you would expect on a trip to any overseas location.

Why Troncones is a Good Fit for the Whole Family

The town of Troncones is a small, undeveloped beach community located 20 miles north of the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo region. Home to a population of less than 1,000 (many of whom are resort and Mexico villa rental owners), this is the kind of place where you’ll find free-roaming chickens, community events, and a hammock in almost every single yard. A fishing town for centuries, you’ll feel like you stepped back in time—to an era when family and friends worked hard to build a true community lifestyle.

The cities of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, by contrast, boast a population just over 100,000. And even with the larger number of residents, these towns are fairly small by Mexican standards. Most of the high-rise hotels and beachfront resorts are built in areas of affluence, where natural beauty and city amenities co-exist. And because regular bus and taxi service between the larger cities and Troncones are always running, it’s easy to stay connected.

This is why we established our Mexico vacation villas in Troncones. You can bring the whole family to enjoy a low-key vacation that still offers plenty of activities, from surfing and horseback riding to birdwatching and playing on the beach. Children of all ages are welcome here, and many kids find that watching sea turtles hatch and make their way to the ocean is even better than a visit to a traditional theme park!

Safety in Coastal Mexico

This part of Mexico is one of the safest areas you can travel in the entire country. Known as an ideal tropical destination for vacationers from all over the world, the towns rely heavily on the tourist trade. Because of this, city developers and leaders have always put a focus on traveler safety. You’ll find that the infrastructure is well-suited for the modern traveler, with everything from Internet connections in your private villa to updated hospital facilities in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo that are able to accommodate almost every type of medical emergency.

As is the case with any travel to Mexico, however, precautions should always be taken. Don’t drink the water out of the tap, be sure and wash all your produce with bottled water before you eat it, avoid traveling after dark, and stay close to the tourist centers. For more information on travel safety, visit the U.S. Department of State website on travel to Mexico.

If you have any questions or concerns about traveling to your Mexico vacation villa, we encourage you to contact us directly. We know that travel safety is an important factor in your decision to come here, and we will do our best to put you in touch with the right resources to make your trip as perfect and safe as you want it to be!
