Mexico Vacation Rentals Offer a Wide Variety of Activities

Our last post talked about possible vacation activities, focused on what to look for in a Mexico vacation rental. Our beach life in Troncones also offers a mix of traditional sports, eco tour adventures, and a wide variety of Mexican and seafood restaurants for your dining pleasure.

Vacation Sports

Golf and tennis seem to be the most popular sports for tourists in Mexico, and you can find facilities just about everywhere. Check in with your potential resorts to see if they have facilities on hand, or if there are clubs in the area where you can play.

Access to Mexico Eco Tours

Some people want to explore the natural reserves that are becoming an important part of Mexican conservation efforts, while others want a different kind of experience altogether. If eco-tours are something you’re interested in, look for an area like Troncones, where you can zipline through the forest, visit a sea turtle hatchery, kayak into lagoons, and whale watch all in the same day.

Dining Options for Your Mexico Resort

No matter why you come to Mexico, chances are you’ll want to enjoy some of the local cuisine while you’re here. You’ll find plenty of high-end restaurants in the larger cities, and can enjoy international cuisine that rivals that of any metropolitan center.

In smaller towns, like Troncones, you’ll find more of a focus on family-owned restaurants and hidden gems. And if fresh seafood is your thing, you can’t beat a fishing village on the coast. Depending on your travel needs and budget, you’ll also want to look for accommodations that have a kitchen en suite so you can do some cooking on your own.

Perhaps nothing can make or break a vacation as quickly as the facilities that act as your home base. Casa de la Sirena is a west coast resort that offers a luxury beach community feeling at a fraction of the cost of regular resorts. We always welcome your questions, and encourage you to explore the different types of villas we offer to make you feel at ease and happy with your destination choice.

Family Friendly Activities for Your Mexico Beach Vacation

Mexico beachfront rentals aren’t just for couples and those looking for a quiet vacation full of romance and time napping in the sand. It’s becoming more and more common for families to seek out a tropical haven where they can not only enjoy the idyllic tropical backdrop, but where they can create memories with their kids that will last a lifetime.

A Typical Day in Paradise

Many people assume that a small, beachfront community won’t have enough action to keep kids happy. After all, there aren’t any water slides, roller coasters, or dolphin shows in this part of Mexico, and you won’t find a toy store or mall to entertain them if rain starts to fall.

Fortunately, the low-key atmosphere here is perfect for kids of all ages, and it’s possible to not only have a good family vacation, but a great one. By allowing you and your family to take a step back from the fast-paced, plugged-in lifestyle, Troncones is an ideal vacation destination.

Things to Do in Troncones

Depending on your kids’ ages and tastes, there are a number of activities here that everyone can enjoy.

  • Beach activities (swimming, surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, playing in the sand)
  • Tide pool exploration
  • Private swimming pools
  • Eco-tours, which include kayaking into lagoons or bird watching along the shores
  • El Refugio de Potosí (a popular center for wildlife conservation and environmental education)
  • Whale watching
  • Sea turtle hatcheries
  • Zip line adventures
  • Cave exploring
  • Hiking
  • Horseback riding
  • Mountain biking
  • Sports fishing
  • Golf
  • Tennis

Of course, the more active city lifestyle is never more than 30 kilometers away, so if you do need a change of pace, you can be in Ixtapa or Zihuatanejo resort areas in mere minutes.

Troncones, Mexico: Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo’s Secret Paradise

The Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo region is one of the more popular vacation destinations for those seeking a Mexico beach vacation. Although they are two distinct cities, Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are often lumped together because of their proximity and their shared focus on tourism. They are located about 150 miles north of Acapulco, sharing the same stretch of the Costa Grande, but with fewer crowds and a more traditional atmosphere.

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is the third most popular tourist area in Mexico (after Cancun and Puerto Vallarta). It is known around the world as an ideal destination for history buffs and sports fisherman, as well as families who want to enjoy coastal Mexico without the traditionally young and unruly crowds associated with spring break destinations.

Things to Do in Zihuatanejo

A Mexican beach vacation comes with all sorts of itinerary options. In addition to the popular activities of sunbathing and enjoying the beach, there are shops, restaurants, nightclubs, historical ruins, museums, and eco-tourism sites. Water sports enthusiasts will enjoy surfing and snorkeling, as well as fishing, which remains one of the most popular options here.

Of course, not all the great locations are within city boundaries. Some of the best historical sites require a day trip closer to the country’s interior. The upscale shopping and nightlife of Ixtapa are a small distance from the waterfront center of Zihuatanejo, and are often best enjoyed on a quick weekend away.

And if what you really want is a real secret paradise, where the crowds disappear only to leave sun, sand, surf, and an incredible luxury vacation opportunity, a forty-five minute trip north is all you need. Troncones, Mexico is a small fishing village located in the same state, and with the same great tropical backdrop. But instead of crowds of people and the noise of a metropolitan center, the only things you’ll see and hear are the typical side effects of a tropical beach villa: silence and nature.

Troncones, Mexico

The history of Troncones is one of a fishing village that remained untouched by commerce and industry for centuries. The town didn’t open up to tourism until the mid-twentieth century, and even then on a small scale that enticed those looking for adventure away from the city centers. Today, it remains an almost hidden gem of a destination—but that doesn’t mean you won’t find plenty to see and do. A brief list of activities here might include:

  • Horseback Riding
  • Yoga
  • Tennis
  • Golf
  • Fishing
  • Surfing/Longboarding
  • Kiteboarding
  • Swimming
  • Boating
  • Snorkeling
  • Beachcombing
  • Sea Turtle/Whale Watching
  • Weddings
  • Fine Dining
  • Eco-Tours

Of course, this list doesn’t even begin to touch all the romantic possibilities of a private villa for two. Romantic walks on the beach, a day spent hand-in-hand on the sand, or even the luxury accommodations of your private facilities offer endless opportunities to enjoy your Mexico beach vacation.

If you are planning a trip to coastal Mexico, be sure and include Troncones on your list of possibilities. Close enough to city centers to provide everything you need, but remote enough to offer everything you want, it’s the ideal tropical vacation destination.

Troncones, an Ecological Paradise on the Mexican Coast

Troncones is a small fishing village located in the Mexican state of Guerrero. A popular spot for Mexican beach vacation getaways, Troncones offers an incredible look at the natural ecosystem of tropical Mexico. Nowhere else will you find that perfect balance of luxury accommodations, small-town comforts, and the virtually untouched animal and plant life that exist here in abundance.

Wildlife in Guerrero, Mexico

Guerrero is known around the world as an ecological wonder. Within this small state, you’ll find everything from ocean and beachfront wildlife to the mountainous forests of the interior. Unlike many other tourist destinations in Mexico, this one remains an environmental haven thanks to a strong focus by the Mexican Government on sustainability and eco-tourism.

In fact, this small fishing village has one of the largest collections of sea turtle hatcheries, alternative waste management systems, and solar-run businesses in all of Mexico. Sanctuary lagoons are open to the public, and birdwatching is a popular pastime both on the coast and further in the interior. You’ll even find nature outposts designed to help facilitate your exploration into the wildlife.

Whether you prefer to enjoy nature by exploring the waterfalls and federally-protected forests by foot, or if you want an insider’s look at how the scientific community here has embraced species preservation, you’ll find it all within an easy distance of your Mexican beach villa at Casa de la Sirena.

When to Visit Mexico?

Your eco-experience in the tropical Troncones region will depend primarily on when you make your visit. Although our location means that you’ll find warm weather and sun throughout the year, there are still marked seasons that have an impact on local wildlife.

  • Dry Season: The drier season lasts from November through May, and you’ll enjoy sun almost every day—a big change from the colder winters up north.

  • Rainy Season: From June through October, the rainy season comes into play. This doesn’t mean you’ll be forced to stay inside—it just means you can expect higher rates of humidity, more rain in the early morning, and some major waves out on the ocean. This is the best time for eco-tourists, since this is when the flowers come into bloom and the native animals begin their reproductive season.

Your Mexican Beach Getaway

One of the best things about a place like Troncones is that there is no one-size-fits-all Mexican beach vacation package. You can easily immerse yourself in the ecology here, spending all of your time in the wildlife sanctuaries and taking tours of the federal forest lands. You can just as easily visit the eco-friendly sites as a daytrip or on a day when the weather prevents you from sunbathing or surfing. Even though the town of Troncones is fairly small, the area is huge in terms of possibilities.

Of course, having a comfortable place to come home to after your day’s adventures are through is also important. Casa de la Sirena offers the perfect touch of luxury to put a finish to each day—and because we subscribe to the same eco-conscious outlook that’s prevalent everywhere here, you can rest assured that we are doing our part to ensure that Troncones remains a Mexican vacation destination that will be sustained for decades to come.

Whale Watching and Sea Turtle Adventures in Coastal Mexico

If you are a nature lover, a Mexico vacation villa is the perfect place to enjoy an eco-friendly trip without sacrificing comfort or luxury. Along the western coast of Mexico, where the seaside fishing town of Troncones is located, it is common to have both whale sightings and regular sea turtle releases. These sights can be enjoyed either from your private beach villa at Casa de la Sirena or as part of one of the tours or nature preservation organizations that make their home here.

Sea Turtles in Troncones

The journey of newly hatched sea turtles to the ocean is one that has gained much publicity in recent years. The treacherous path these turtles take is fraught with natural predators and dangers, and few babies make it on their own.

Because this part of Mexico is a natural habitat for sea turtles, the locals and preservation groups have put a lot of effort into saving sea turtles and helping them to avoid extinction. In fact, just a few miles along the stretch of beach outside Casa de la Sirena, you’ll find pens where sea turtle eggs have been buried. The pens are put up to help protect the eggs from predators, and also help mark where visitors can look to watch the miraculous hatching of the eggs.

Most sea turtle babies are hatched in the morning, so you have to be an early riser to get the best show. You’ll find all sorts of species, from the green turtle and the leatherback to the olive ridley. The most common hatching activity takes place during the summer months.

Whale Watching in Troncones

There aren’t any professional whale watching tours stationed here, but that doesn’t mean you can’t catch a good show. In fact, if what you’re after is a private and incredible whale watching experience, you can’t do any better than Troncones.

Throughout the winter months (December through March is the peak whale watching season), thousands of California gray whales migrate from the northern seas to the central Pacific coast. There are also common sightings of humpback and blue whales during this time, and scientists report the existence of up to 23 species of whales and dolphins in all.

The whales’ activities during this time are many, and you can not only watch as they feed and frolic in the crystal blue waters, but you can also catch a glimpse of their newborn calves. Many of our guests report sightings from their private Mexico beach villas, although you can also charter a boat to get closer to the action.

Enjoy Nature on Your Terms

If you’re planning a Mexico beach vacation, be sure and set aside some time for nature watching. It doesn’t matter if you spend a morning sipping coffee and watching whales from your private terrace, or if you make the journey to watch the incredible sea turtles as they start their lives—these are the kinds of things you can only experience in Mexico.

Staying Fit and Active in Your Mexico Vacation Rental

One of the biggest challenges to going on vacation — whether it’s to Mexico, Europe, or even just across state lines — is maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The good habits of eating and exercise that we work so hard on at home become difficult when faced with a change of schedule, lots of delicious food and alcohol, and a desire to do nothing more than spend the day soaking in the sun on the beach.

When you book a Mexico vacation rental at Casa de la Sirena, we make it easy to enjoy your getaway without losing sight of the bigger picture of your health and fitness levels. In fact, with a little advance planning, you can incorporate some of the higher-intensity activities we have here into your daily plans so that you can exercise without ever feeling like you’re exercising.

Here are a few tips for staying on track during your vacation:

Begin and/or end your day with a walk on the beach. The sunsets and sunrises here are spectacular, and there is something so calming about taking advantage of the crash of the waves as the sun and moon trade places. For a real workout, you might even consider taking a run along the expansive stretch of our private beach. Running in the sand is a tough workout even for the hardiest athletes.

Take advantage of local sports. In Troncones, activities like swimming, birdwatching, surfing, horseback riding, and hiking are all common among both tourists and residents. Now is a great time to branch out and try an activity you may not have considered before. It might even help to plan one of these each day, leaving the rest of the time to do your traditional lounging and hammock activities.

Rent our yoga facilities. Casa de la Sirena is one of the only Mexico vacation resorts that offers a beachside yoga studio that you or a group of visitors can rent. You do need to come prepared with your own instructor, but taking a yoga or pilates retreat is a great way to enjoy a new kind of vacation that’s all about your health and well being.

Cook and eat locally. Troncones is a traditional fishing village, and the residents here tend to rely on a diet that is full of fresh fruits and vegetables and fish right out of the ocean. When you book a vacation villa, you have a fully-equipped kitchenette and barbeque right in your accommodations. You can take advantage of the great local produce or eat out in a restaurant that taps into the economy and farms of the area.

Staying healthy on vacation doesn’t have to be a chore. Although it might be hard to say no to one more helping of arroz con pollo, or to get up early to take advantage of the cooler weather for your early morning run along the beach, you’ll feel a lot better knowing that you haven’t indulged yourself to an unhealthy level.

And if you do slip and enjoy one too many margaritas, don’t worry too much about it. A Mexico vacation resort like this one is meant to be enjoyed, regardless of how much time you’re able to devote to exercise and diet.

Native Flora and Fauna: The Eco Village of Troncones, Mexico

Regardless of whether you’re staying in Troncones for a few days or a few weeks, it’s definitely in your best interest to take some time to enjoy the local flora and fauna here. For centuries, Troncones has stood as a small fishing village, where people have enjoyed quiet lives in tune with nature. Even today, it is largely untouched by the commerce and tourism of the neighboring metropolitan centers, which means you get to sample the focus on nature that is still relevant to area residents.

In fact, one of the unique things about this Mexican beach vacation destination is that you are within walking distance of a true eco-village, where everyone works together to preserve the wildlife that makes life here that much better.

By Land

Troncones is located in the state of Guerrero, which boasts one of the most diverse ecosystems in all of Mexico — and the government has worked hard to keep it that way. The Pacific jungle is everything you’d expect from the tropical locale, and the mountainous area is filled with lush forests, foliage, and hot springs, much of which is open to the public and protected from development. Waterfalls and features along the shore complete the picture, and you’ll find a number of hatcheries and other services working hard to maintain the animal population.

Many of the available nature tours in Troncones take you to the fringes of the forests and jungles to catch a glimpse of the delicate eco-system here. In addition to the more well-known deer and raccoons, you’ll find native iguanas (like the garrobos) and even crocodiles.

By Sea

Whale watching is a popular activity here, and depending on the season, you can catch a glimpse of Humpback whales, dolphins, and even the rare Orca as they make their way up and down the coast.

Boating excursions and snorkeling opportunities also await, and you might be able to spy seahorses, sailfish, manta rays, and whalesharks in their native habitat. Fishing opportunities are also available for those who want to take a more active role in exploring the water, though there are restrictions on the types and sizes of fish you can catch. (Catch and release fishing is also an option.)

The sea turtle population here is very important, and most of the beaches are protected breeding grounds, which means vehicles are off limits on the sandy shores. A local hatchery also works hard to ensure that many of the turtles go on to survive the treacherous journey from land to sea, thereby saving the turtles for future generations.

By Air

Troncones is known throughout Mexico as one of the premier destinations for birdwatching. Over 100 species of birds make their home in and around the Troncones area, ranging from kingfishers and pelicans to hummingbirds and herons. The sounds of these melodious creatures greet many people in the morning and lull them to sleep each night.

Whether you intend to take in all of nature or just catch a glimpse from your beachfront villa, the opportunities here are endless. You don’t have to be a scientist to appreciate the beauty of the nature all around you in Troncones, and Casa de la Sirena is here to support all your adventures into the local setting!
